Baltimore makes one ‘top startup city’ listicle, but not another

Popular Mechanics ranks Baltimore No. 5, while the author of the book “Screw the Valley” looks elsewhere.

The list makers are focusing on startup hubs outside of Silicon Valley, but Baltimore is getting mixed results.
The city made Popular Mechanics’ list of “The 14 Best Startup Cities in America.” (You know a list has a chance of passing muster when it starts out, “No disrespect to San Francisco or Brooklyn.”) Baltimore ranks No. 5 on that one. The writeup mostly focuses on Woodberry Kitchen and chef Spike Gjerde, who is one of the main players behind the Baltimore Food Hub. We can’t help but point out that ETC is misidentified as being located in Canton — but at least it got a mention.
Tech Cocktail left Baltimore off its list of 7 Top Cities for Startups – Outside of Silicon Valley. We give Tech Cocktail a lot of credit since it has visited Baltimore and held events here over the past few years. The list is actually based on Timothy Sprinkle’s new book, Screw the Valley. His seven “top cities”? New York, Austin, Raleigh, Detroit, Boulder, Kansas City and Las Vegas. Sprinkle’s explanation:

“New York was the exception, but I was looking for smaller cities with dense cores of entrepreneurial activity, and these are the ones that kept coming up in conversations.”

If anyone wants to get in touch, we’ll just leave Sprinkle’s contact page right here, and here’s his Twitter.
