This Week in Jobs DMV: Free Trees Edition

Leafy greens, jobs and more.

Editor’s note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ — “twidge.”). Below is this week’s edition; it’s meant to live in your inbox. Sign up for the newsletter here.

Set Down Your Roots

If you’ve got a waterway on your property in Maryland, the folks in the state’s Department of Natural Resources would like to talk with you.

The agency is giving away free tree seedlings, as part of its Backyard Buffers program. The program reportedly aims to help homeowners create a “streamside buffer of native trees and shrubs,” helping mitigate runoff, create homes for wildlife, and prevent erosion.

Sounds like a great way to make up for all those resume and cover-letter drafts you’ve crumpled up and thrown away.

The News

Our team at Technical.ly follows job trends and hiring 24/7, so we put together our first Hiring and Workplace Culture Trends Report, a collection of journalism, client interviews and industry observations that offers an unparalleled look into workplace culture, HR, hiring and operations professionals. This includes how-tos on returning to your foundation, auditing your DEI commitment, confirming remote flexibility and much more.

Keeping with the how-to theme, Technical.ly is also launching BuildingUp, a quarterly webinar series on building better workplaces. In the debut tomorrow, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. EST, Technically Media CEO and cofounder Chris Wink and guests will dive into the above-mentioned report, its key findings, important takeaways and implications for the year ahead.

The D.C.-based tech nonprofit and accelerator Smart City Works has named the finalists for its inaugural Smart City Challenge. They include a new way to expand fiber optic networks, hospital safety tech, and nine other innovative ideas.

They’re in the money: The Baltimore startup CyDeploy won a grant from the Maryland Industrial Partnerships, which should help the company shepherd its artificial intelligence technology to the pilot phase. The cybersecurity firm tests updates to critical IT and OT systems — helping make sure glitches and problems are caught before the updates are installed on the actual systems.

The End

While the start of this newsletter was more earthbound, this part looks to the heavens: Anyone who spent evenings around Fells Point was likely familiar with Herman Heyn, the so-called “street corner astronomer” who, for 2,858 nights over three decades, set up his telescope on the sidewalk for passersby to gaze at the night sky. He died at age 90, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Here’s to keeping your eyes on the stars, no matter where you are.
