These are Philly’s 20 coolest startups: Philadelphia Magazine and ThinkFest

The list featured two student startups (we'll call VenturePact a student startup though its founders recently graduated), two pre-launch companies, six companies based outside the city and two DreamIt Ventures grads.

What are the region’s coolest startups?

Philadelphia Magazine chose 20 and put them front and center in its November issue, which focused on innovation and served as a check-in on the local tech scene. The innovation issue is timed with the magazine’s second ThinkFest, an event series that this year is featuring a heavy footprint from local tech leaders.

The Philly Mag list featured two student startups (we’ll call VenturePact a student startup though its founders recently graduated), two pre-launch companies, six companies based outside the city and two DreamIt Ventures grads.

Here’s who made the cut (and, of course, tell us in the comments who got shafted):

Get a preview of some of the feature here, but to read the whole thing, you’ll have to buy the magazine. The issue also features a story about the West Philly Hybrid X Team, a Q&A with tech leaders on “how to succeed in business without leaving Philly” and a story about local efforts to train youth to be entrepreneurs, including Springside Chestnut Hill Academy’s entrepreneurial learning program and PeopleLinx’s Junior Entrepreneur Bootcamp.

The tech scene will also get some love during the magazine’s ThinkFest event series Nov. 4-9, which will feature TechGirlz founder Tracey Welson-Rossman, First Round Capital founder Josh Kopelman, SeventySix Capital founder Wayne Kimmel, City of Philadelphia Chief Data Officer Mark Headd and Drexel professor Frank Lee. Get tickets here.

This isn’t the first time that Philly Mag has profiled Philly tech.

In 2010, Philly mag profiled the growing community but got slammed for its coverage of Guggenheim Ventures. To its credit, the magazine’s annual Best of Philly list has included more and more tech-related picks, from 2009 to 2012 to this year.
