A slightly less than life-sized cheetah statue and a brightly burning neon sign are the first two things that greet you when you walk into the 5th floor Curalate office. The 2401 Walnut Street office is a hint that this company might be more than your average startup. Quirky and driven, this four-year-old visual commerce and marketing company has quickly become a darling of the Philly tech scene and garnered some national recognition too.

Curalate’s hiring goals are currently “everyone,” but don’t be fooled into thinking that means they will hire just anyone. As Talent Acquisition Manager Trisha Noel explained, “In my experience, most companies look for candidates who check 7 or 8 out of the 10 boxes on the job spec – at Curalate, we look for candidates who not only check all 10 boxes, but who show us 3-4 boxes that we didn’t even know we needed.”

A sense of humor is a key box to be checked at Curalate. From unconventional hiring – to “Curalatte” Coffee Meetings – to hundreds of Slack channels used to connect the company’s three locations (Seattle, NYC, PHL) like CuraBalls (their soccer team), CuraLadies (a female-only Slack Channel) and CuraDogs (a Slack channel dedicated to, you guessed it – photos of the dogs of Curalate employees) to name a few – the company has managed to strike a strong balance between building a fun work environment and producing top tier visual marketing products. Employees talk company-wide quarterly retros (a retrospective look at individual team performance and the overall business) with the same tone and enthusiasm they use to describe the weekly office happy hours.

Culture Q&A

How fast is Curalate growing?

We grew by 89% in 2015 and have grown an additional 43% since January. We are always on the lookout for top talent. That said, passion, drive, strategic thinking, a desire to solve hard problems, and a bias for execution is essential. . .oh and a strong GIF game doesn’t hurt.

What are two words that define the Curalate culture?

Fast and transparent.

What is the team dynamic?

Teams are diverse, collaborative, and you’ll feel your impact immediately. Passion is a requirement, and our teams know how to collaborate, execute, and make ideas come to life.

How do Curalate employees stay connected?

Communication is key at Curalate, so giving our employees the tools they need to communicate and collaborate across three offices/cities is essential to productivity. Slack is one of those tools, but we also have bi-weekly All Hands meetings, where every team presents what they are working on, to the entire company.

What can a new employee expect once hired?

Expect a 3-day onboarding session complete with product deep dives, pitches, class photos and bright orange Curalate swag which aims to acquaint new employees with our business and culture. Transparency is a core value, and we want hires to understand all aspects of the Curalate organization.

Describe the office.

Curalate’s Philadelphia office is open and airy with floor-to-ceiling windows and great views of the city. We tend to lean towards mid-century modern decor, but you don’t have to look far to find something quirky or ridiculous. Be it an inflatable orca, or our mascot Shippy, a taxidermic squirrel, it’s easy to see that humor is in our DNA. Additionally, our execs and co-founders sit right amongst our teams.

What’s unique about the office?

Our conference rooms are named after divas (like J-Lo and Madonna), and we have a fully stocked kitchen and beer fridge. Another popular area is the indoor park - complete with astroturf, rocking chairs and clouds that hang from the ceiling. But most of all, it’s the energy and feeling that is palpable when you walk through the door. The passion, innovation, warmth. . .and of course, the laughter, are what make this place so special.

How often do team bonding activities occur?

Our teams really enjoy one another and often organize their own events in addition to company-wide boat rides and bashes. Multiple times a week there are bocce leagues, soccer matches, spin classes or Cura-Quizzo games. We’ve also been known to organize the occasional chain-restaurant bar crawl, hitting favorites like TGI Fridays, Ruby Tuesdays, and The Cheesecake Factory.
