Editor’s note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ — “twidge.”). Below is this week’s edition. Here’s the last one we published; it’s meant to live in your inbox. Sign up for the newsletter here.
We Missed One
Squad, this one’s on us. We should have never withheld from you this job listing seeking a “Household manager/cook/nanny” (which we urge you to read in full).
As a part of the tech community, you probably excel at helping with math homework and “strategically thinking through vacation options” with spreadsheets. We may not know how well you garden, or whether you can cook for a family that “eats organic,” or if you can “ski at an intermediate level,” “do calisthenics with the kids” and speak multiple languages. But we can guess — from your experience watching Game of Thrones and The Witcher, or simply navigating today’s open-office-plans — you can probably reliably “build alliances with other kids’ parents and nannies” pretty darn well.
Next time, we will do better and include all of the many ways you can make use of your hard-earned degree — although, if you truly can do all that plus drive in the snow, drive “in other countries,” and you’re “strong, athletic, [and] high energy,” the Central Intelligence Agency may also want to talk with you.
The News
New York and Boston like to think that they’re the centers of the universe. But there’s no reason that the overwhelming majority of venture capital funding should be flowing to those two cities (and Silicon Valley) alone. David Hall, managing partner at Rise of the Rest Seed Fund from Revolution, is looking to change that. By committing to building ecosystems, Hall and his team in D.C. are allowing local entrepreneurs the opportunity to stay in their hometowns to create jobs and networks — as well as take advantage of investment opportunities that plenty of other investors overlook. He talked about it on this week’s episode of “Off the Sidelines” — the investor education podcast produced by us at Technical.ly in partnership with Project Entrepreneur, a program by UBS.
NET/WORK, the Super Bowl of job fairs, returns to Baltimore and D.C. next month. On March 4 at The Assembly Room in Baltimore and on March 24 at The Yard in D.C., mingle and network with dozens of tech hiring organizations, plus more than 200 technologists and tech-adjacent professionals. Each event is the biggest celebration of tech jobs in the region; tech and industry leaders, current employees, recent grads, and those eager for career growth in software development, design, engineering, UX, marketing and more are all invited.
D.C.’s own Collective Liberty, a nonprofit that harnesses data and analysis to combat human trafficking, was named a finalist for the 2020 SXSW Pitch in the Social and Culture category. It’ll be competing in the finals March 14 and 15, where judges will pick “Best in Show” and a winner from each category. Collective Liberty, now in its 12th year, is based in Cleveland Park.

The End
The aforementioned job-listing for retired-special-agent-turned-nanny apparently came from a CEO hoping to — as she told Slate — outsource “a lot of executive functioning program management.” If that somehow doesn’t suit your fancy, there’s always public speaking: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, planning to go self-sufficient, can expect to pull down a cool half-million dollars per speech. (And, hey, Harry served in the special forces; he may be just the man for the nanny role.)
See you next week!
