On the Market: Amazon officially starts hiring for 5 positions at its NoVa HQ2

With the commitment to bring 25,000 workers to its second HQ in NoVa over 12 years, Amazon posted its first local roles, and announced plans to hire 400 in the region this year.

In November, ecommerce tech giant Amazon announced that Northern Virginia would get half of its second headquarters. Now, I know we’ve all been wondering about how the move could shape DMV tech talent, and we’re about to start finding out.

Amazon has officially started hiring for five positions for the Arlington County HQ, and announced that it intends to create 400 jobs in 2019 for the region, Ardine Williams, VP of workforce development at Amazon, said in a blog post earlier this week. Amazon made a commitment to bring more than 25,000 full-time jobs to its second headquarters over 12 years ad this hiring news its its first stride toward achieving that goal.

All of the positions require college degrees and experience in each field.

With this hiring announcement, Amazon also leased some temporary office space on Crystal Drive where the initial team will work come June. Amazon will open its first building in the fall. As part of the Amazon Future Engineer program, the tech giant will support funding for intro and AP computer science classes in 27 schools across Virginia.

After announcing a $3 million investment from Vancouver-based TIMIA Capital, public transportation tech company TransitScreen is doing some major hiring as it eyes a larger office in the District. The tech startup will be posting more positions, but it currently has four listed across its sales and marketing teams. TransitScreen is looking to add a marketing coordinator, sales development representative, account executive and director of sales to its team. For all of the positions, TransitScreen didn’t have a college degree listed in the qualifications, and is more focused on seeking experienced professionals.

Alexandria, Va.-based Motley Fool is looking to add a content lead to its team. The Motley Fool has been busy at work since it raised $145 million for its early stage, tech-focused venture capital fund called Motley Fool Ventures. The venture component of the multimedia financial services company recently led a $5.1 million Series A funding round for Philly-based Roundtrip, makers of an on-demand transportation platform for the healthcare space. The content lead will join the Motley Fool team to primarily work with its product and leadership team to create a content strategy for the next seven months in preparation for the company’s first live event.
