Last week, the fashion community lost an icon.

Iris Apfel, an interior designer and eye-catching dresser, passed at 102. Even if you don’t consider yourself a clotheshorse, chances are you’ve seen the impact of Apfel’s excessive style in interior design or on the runway. Her maximalist wardrobe even became a sensation, spawning brand collaborations and a touring museum show.

Apfel once said, “When you don’t dress like everybody else, you don’t have to think like everybody else.”

You may not religiously follow trends, but how can an unexpected outfit or unusual accessory change how you see yourself? Or the way others see you?

Who knows? Maybe a new look could pave the way for a new opportunity.
