Breads, greens, jobs and more.

Editor’s note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ — “twidge.”). Below is this week’s edition. Here’s the last one we published; it’s meant to live in your inbox. Sign up for the newsletter here.

The Producers

Between sourdoughs, banana breads, no-knead loafs, and assorted (mis)adventures in experimental baking, stress and ample time at home has inspired this reporter — and, apparently, plenty of others — to explore the outer reaches of sifting and whisking. Thankfully, farms and restaurants across the DMV are now offering Community Support Agriculture plans to help make sure we’re getting our servings of fruits and veggies — and apparently it’s booming.

With shoppers reluctant to head to stores, CSAs have become a crucial lifeline for not only us homebodies now flirting with scurvy, but the farms that can no longer ship to the restaurants they once relied on for clients. DCist has the rundown (but, hey, if you want to pretend to be Dr. Frankenstein while you “give life” to your new sourdough starter, don’t let us stop you).

The News

No fooling, last week marked the start of Healthcare Technologies Month here at Technical.ly. We’ll be focusing on how healthcare systems are coping with COVID-19, and what local tech communities can do to help. Check out some of our stories on how companies in Baltimore and Virginia are leveraging their tech and data to help with the coronavirus response. And if you think you can, ahem, diagnose a story — or prescribe an expert or organization for us to talk to — slip us a note. Just make sure we can read the handwriting on the ‘script.

Inside the $2 trillion CARES Act that President Trump signed March 27 is a $349 billion Paycheck Protection Program to help small businesses avoid layoffs. How can your startup get some of that dough? Check out the latest Dreamit Ventures #DreamitLive interview, where you’ll get the rundown on whether your venture qualifies, the size of the loan you might receive, whether furloughs count and when you can expect that cash. Or, if you’ve been having trouble falling asleep, you can read all 880 pages of the bill.

Talk about chutzpah! Double-price markups on hand-sanitizer and masks. Fifty-percent premiums for toilet paper. Fortunately, eagle-eyed watchdogs at Zentail in Columbia, Maryland, are keeping an eye on pandemic price-gouging on Amazon. Zentail’s director of growth flagged it in a post on the Zentail blog. Amazon, meanwhile, has suspended close to 4,400 seller accounts.

The Jobs

D.C.

  • If you lean more Hamlin Hamlin & McGill than Saul Goodman, the Big Law top-50 Covington & Burling is hiring a Programmer/Analyst 2 (Business Applications). You’ll be responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting database-driven business applications for the firm and its clients.
  • Here’s your chance to humble-brag that you work with the intel community: Stratus Solutions is seeking a Software Engineer to help advance the U.S. intelligence community mission in the cloud (we assume cloud-storage, not infiltrating Cloud City).

Maryland

  • SmartLogic in Baltimore is hiring a Sales & Software Engineer.
  • We’re all “product owners,” but 14 West in Baltimore is hiring the kind of Product Owner who’s an IT professional with an eye for “impeccable” detail to help set, prioritize, and evaluate the work generated by a software Scrum team.
  • For you aspiring Lesley Knopes: Help make government more efficient by joining the Baltimore City Office of Information & Technology as a Technical Writer, where you’ll pen rough drafts and manuals for city agencies. The role includes some communications work, too.
  • Dovel Technologies in Rockville is looking for a Software Engineer to help lead development work on new and existing websites for the National Institutes of Health.

Virginia

  • C2S Consulting Group in Herndon is hiring a Java Developer for an entry-level position.
  • Reinventing Geospatial Inc. in Springfield is seeking a DevOps Engineer with software engineering skills to work with tools across automated building, security scanning, testing monitoring and deployment.
  • Accenture Federal Services in Arlington is looking for an Associate UX/UI Interaction Designer.

Remote

The End

As tens of thousands of people across D.C. turned to the District’s unemployment website to apply for benefits, they discovered a vastly outdated website optimized for Internet Explorer — which, of course, Microsoft had discontinued four years ago — and incompatible with mobile.

Which is to say: The work you do is important! Now, good luck out there this week, and stay safe!
