UMBC plans to expand bwtech incubator due to cybersecurity-startup growth

The incubator within the Research and Technology Park at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County is at full capacity for the first time since its inception in 1989.
UMBC’s bwtech@UMBC incubator houses early-stage companies in the fields of life sciences, clean technology and cybersecurity, but it’s that final category that UMBC can thank for the lack of vacancies, reports the Baltimore Business Journal:

University officials say the popularity of cyber security and growth in the number of young companies launching in that industry contributed to bwtech@UMBC’s popularity in recent years. … The cyber security incubator has 26 companies and is the fastest growing of the three incubators.

To keep up with demand, UMBC plans to expand its 10,000-square-foot bwtech@UMBC incubator by 3,400 square feet.

Cybersecurity statewide continues to be a booming industry, in large part thanks to U.S. Cyber Command and the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, which employs 56,000 people. And, as Technically Baltimore reported Tuesday, many people already working in the cybersecurity field or looking to get into the industry head to UMBC, which launched a Center for Cybersecurity in late 2012.
