Vheda Health took home the top prize Tuesday in Startup Maryland’s annual Pitch Across Maryland competition.
The Columbia health IT startup works to simplify chronic disease management through personalized on-boarding and care plans as well as live remote monitoring. The company hopes to prevent costly emergency room visits and hospitalizations.
The win was announced after Vheda and the seven other finalists presented to a panel of three judges at TEDCO’s Entrepreneur Expo at the BWI Marriott in Linthicum. BrinkBit, based at the Emerging Technology Centers’ Highlandtown incubator, took home the runner-up prize.

Both companies will automatically be entered into the second round of the state Department of Business and Economic Development’s InvestMaryland Challenge. The judges for the finals were Veneeth Iyengar of Sage Growth Partners, Kris Shock of the Chesapeake Regional Tech Council and angel investor Culin Tate.
The Pitch Across Maryland tour went from mid-September to early October and made stops all over Maryland, with one day spent in Washington, D.C.
Another award handed out by TEDCO President Rob Rosenbaum was in the Eastern Shore Business Plan Competition. That prize went to Nuvu of Mount Airy.
Nuvu’s in-development mobile app is planned to provide information on nearby events, general demographics (gender breakdown, age ranges, etc.) of people at particular bars and allow connections with friends old and new. Nuvu’s prize included $25,000 cash and a $2,000 per month discount from the Rackspace Startup Program for the next year.
