PlaySugarHouse enters New Jersey sportsbook market

The online spinoff of the Fishtown casino gets in on the action when it comes to legal sports betting. You can only access the service in New Jersey, however.

PlaySugarHouse, the online-only spinoff of SugarHouse Casino, added a sportsbook section Thursday. This comes one day after the limited launch of Borgata’s mobile sports betting through PlayMGM.

PlaySugarHouse has partnered with Atlantic City’s Golden Nugget to offer this service only in New Jersey.

Rush Street Interactive operates the online casino and sports book. That company’s parent company, Rush Street Gaming, owns Fishtown’s SugarHouse Casino and three others in the U.S. The deal was announced just days after the Supreme Court struck down federal legislation that banned most states from allowing single-game sports betting. PlaySugarHouse launched in 2016.

This is likely not the first step towards a sportsbook stampede in the Keystone State, where operators don’t have as easy a pass as they do in New Jersey. High license costs and a prolonged waiting period means we may not see a sportsbook accessible to PA residents before 2019.

PlaySugarHouse offers bets on a variety of professional sports, ranging from the North American Big Four to cricket, darts, rugby and dozens of international soccer leagues.

“Our goal is to offer as many bets on as many different type of sporting events that are legal and permitted by the NJ [Division of Gaming Enforcement],” said Richard Schwartz, president of Rush Gaming Interactive. “We believe the state of New Jersey will benefit if more variety of bets are permitted so that the regulated sites in New Jersey can offer a competitive volume of bets compared to the illegal sportsbook operators that don’t generate tax revenue for NJ or have effective consumer protections in place.”

Certain bets are not available, however. For instance, Villanova meeting Temple on the gridiron is off the board as the Wildcats play at the FCS level. Most leagues are only available with the next game on each team’s schedule. PlaySugarHouse hasn’t posted prices on the Union’s rivalry tilt with New England Saturday.

The online service enters an increasingly crowded market in New Jersey. Most casinos in Atlantic City have physical sportsbooks now. Race tracks at Monmouth and the Meadowlands also offer sports betting through partnerships. An effort to bring sports betting to the shopping complex that occupies the former Garden State Park in Cherry Hill has met legal snafus and appears headed to court.
