There’s a new pop-up drive in movie theater set up at RFK Stadium.
Broccoli City, a local independent music festival curator, teamed up with Washington, D.C.’s official convention and sports authority Events DC to host Park Up DC through October. Movies for all ages will be featured on the big screen with tickets starting at $29 per vehicle.
Movies are shown on a 45-foot wide HD LED digital screen with sound delivered through each vehicle’s FM radio.
“As safety remains our top priority, this drive-in movie series is a prime example of being creative and still able to bring people together to celebrate summertime and enjoy new and classic movies together,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, president and CEO of Events DC, in a statement.
Park Up DC came at a time when many people are probably missing movie theaters, which are still closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. The event series launched on July 17 and will run until Oct. 31. The drive-in movie theater will also service the D.C. community via food banks, church services, community-centric films and documentaries, and possibly musical performances, Broccoli City founder Brandon McEachern told Technical.ly.
“Over the years we have developed a good collaborative relationship with Events DC through our annual music festival, Broccoli City Fest,” McEachern said about how the partnership came to fruition. “We thought the drive-in would be a safe activation that families could enjoy so we pitched it, and Events DC agreed.”
To abide by social distancing orders, vehicles will be parked distantly, tickets can only be purchased online to keep payments cashless, masks must be worn outside of vehicles and each attendee will receive a code of conduct with more details about all of these rules. Local food trucks will be on site that will also be taking cashless mobile orders.
To celebrate Park Up DC’s launch, the organizers hosted an event on July 15 for healthcare workers where they provided complimentary food, treated the to a classic “Jurassic Park” film and attendees heard a message from Mayor Muriel Bowser, thanking them for keeping the community safe.
The organizers behind the new event series use social media to gauge what type of movies people want to see.
“We are different because of the movies we choose,” McEachern said. “We have something for everyone — family movies as well as cultural films.”
For the weekend of July 30 through Aug. 2 and Aug. 6 through 9, Park Up DC will be showing “Bad Boys for Life,” “Fate of the Furious,” “Secret Life of Pets 2” and “Love Jones.” Check out tickets on Park Up DC’s website.
