We spotted 4 jobs of the future at NET/WORK Suburbs

Twenty-five suburban companies were on the hunt for tech talent at Vanguard's lakeside campus.

Inside Vanguard’s sleek Malvern, Pa., campus last night, NET/WORK Suburbs paired up 25 companies with some 200 job seekers hoping to make their next power move.

Hopping from booth to booth, getting fresh headshots and trading biz cards, a slice of the region’s tech workforce came out to scope out open jobs outside the city limits.

“This is not your typical job fair at all,” said Vanguard’s Abha Kumar, Global IT Executive at the investment company, as she kicked off the event. It’s the second year Technical.ly has put together the suburban iteration of our four-year-old, cross-market event series.

Per tradition, beloved editor and swaggadeur-in-residence Zack Seward took to Snapchat (find us at technicallym) and reviewed the companies’ freebies in the audience-acclaimed Swag Report:

We also went around the room checking the which jobs recruiters thought were the “job of the future,” i.e. what’s the one position with the bigger transformative potential, the one shaping what companies’ next decade looks like.

Here’s what we found:

Data Scientist at Jornaya

The company, which just moved its office a tad closer to Philly, is on the market for someone with the skills to use programming, machine learning and quantitative modeling to find insights. Head of Software Development Simon Welch said demand for people with these skills is sky high. (Data was a trend in the job descriptions we spotted at the event.)

Big Data Engineer at JPMorgan Chase

Arjav Parikh, from JPMorganChase, said the jobseeker that lands this gig will help handle “millions of clients and transactions,” helping the financial services company scope out fraud before it happens.

Software Engineer (Java) at CardConnect

Dave Harrison, Director of Software Testing at the recently acquired King of Prussia company, really stumped for all of his open jobs, the engineer spot being one of them. “All of them can be the job of the future because tech has the potential to give us a competitive advantage,” Harrison said. How are things going post-acquisition? Harrison said he’s hiring even more devs now.

DevOps Engineer at Ascensus

“That’s the new job!” said Bilal Malik, the company’s QE lead, as he manned the company’s booth Tuesday. Positions in DevOps (a portmanteau of Developer Operations) is the subject of heated debate in the tech world. At one Philly Tech Week event the position was called out as lame, while some just say it’s morphed into a different thing.

In case you missed the event, don’t fret: here’s our jobs board:

Companies: JPMorgan Chase & Co. / Vanguard / Jornaya / Accolade / Turn5, Inc / Ascensus / Deacom / WorkplaceDynamics / Susquehanna International Group, LLP / Think Company / eMoney Advisor / CardConnect / Delphic Digital / AWeber / Chariot Solutions / Greenphire
