Why TalkLocal moved to College Park

Being close to campus means a steady stream of young talent.

Phone concierge service TalkLocal, which released its mobile app last month, is an emerging startup. Quite literally.
In early 2014, the company was still living in a basement — the original Potomac, Md., headquarters were set up in the house of cofounders Gurpreet and Manpreet Singh. The startup then moved to Disruption Corporation’s headquarters in Crystal City and raised $2.6 million in Series A funding in a round led in part by Disruption’s Crystal Tech Fund.
Last month, the company finally settled into a place of its own in College Park, Md. All three cofounders, including Amandeep Bakshi, studied at the University of Maryland.
The best part of moving back to campus, besides the memories? Interns!
TalkLocal has recruited 25 students, including 13 in sales, said spokesperson Dallea Caldwell. “Working closely with the career office, we’ve been able to recruit tons of developers and recruiters and salespersons,” she said.
TalkLocal has now serviced more than 1 million phone calls and has grown to a full-time staff of about 30 employees.
