Madrid-born mapping company CARTO announced on Tuesday that it is expanding and opening offices in the D.C. metro area. Specifically, CARTO’s newest office (joining offices in Brooklyn, Tartu, Estonia and London) will be based out of Refraction, a “curated office community,” in Reston Town Center in NoVA.

And if our sister site Technical.ly Brooklyn’s extensive coverage of CARTO (previously CartoDB) is any indication, local map enthusiasts should be very excited. The company, which raised a $23 million Series B last year, is really all about visualizing geographic data.
The products the company builds allow developers and (increasingly) laymen to build and analyze data-rich maps. The company mapping experts also sometimes build their own maps — like this one showing what would happen if the L train shut down or this one detailing relative noise levels in NYC.
Here at Technical.ly we love cool maps and are certainly looking forward to seeing what CARTO D.C. creates. Oh, and with the expansion the company is also hiring — get on it, map enthusiasts.
