30 years ago, machine beat man.

It was Feb. 10, 1996, and IBM’s Deep Blue did something most people thought was still years away: It defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov in a regulation match.

Deep Blue was an early form of artificial intelligence designed solely for chess, and the win sparked unease. Kasparov was shaken, commentators were skeptical and the moment was far from a celebration as observers realized that — at least in some ways — computing power was catching up to human intuition.

The match didn’t signal a takeover of the machines. Kasparov ultimately still won the series. But it did mark a shift in how people thought about technology and was a step toward the generative, adaptable AI we know today.

That long-game mindset feels familiar in today’s job market. January tends to be about plans; February is when things start to move. This week’s listings reflect companies thinking a few moves ahead.
