Question of the week: Why do we call computer glitches “bugs”?
Some believe it’s because 78 years ago to the day on September 9, 1947, engineers at Harvard opened up the Mark II computer and discovered a moth trapped in a relay. Grace Hopper, the pioneering computer scientist on the project, may or may not have been the one to turn that moment into a lasting metaphor for problem-solving by popularizing the logbook noting that it was the “first actual case of bug being found.”
But the use of “bug” to refer to a fault or defect goes back even further, to the late 1800s and a newspaper story about Thomas Edison.
Either way, we still use the term computer bug.
Careers can collect bugs, too. Maybe you have a resume gap, your cover letter is unclear or you freeze up in interviews.
Debugging your job search is about spotting those glitches and making the adjustments that keep everything running smoothly, whether by asking a friend or mentor for help or using AI tools to practice answering questions about yourself.
