VHX has had over a million customers, according to the video startup’s stats page.
VHX says its millionth user logged in on the last day of September. “Thanks to a new customer in Beaumont, Texas for making the purchase that was our 1,000,000th ticket,” said Forest Conner, the company’s data scientist. “We’re currently growing by about 1,200 users a day.”
Less than half of the total users have paid for movies, however, so there have been a lot of giveaways in there. It’s also worth noting that VHX takes a pretty behind-the-scenes approach to distribution, so customers may not even realize they’re using the service. VHX says its strategy is to let the filmmakers hog the limelight. Still, nearly $4 million in revenue has passed through the VHX site, as of this writing.
It’s not quite the same as when Kickstarter hit its billionth pledged dollar in March, but it’s still important. It’s a sign that distributed distribution of longform media has a place in the movie lover’s landscape.
