The first class of the AT&T Aspire Accelerator for edtech ventures just named five startups to its first class, including Bushwick’s Quill, a literacy tool that builds students’ skills with personalized writing and proofreading, according to a release from AT&T.
Quill is a nonprofit organization that started in Ridgewood, Queens, but Peter Gault, the executive director and one of its cofounders, said in an email that Quill is working from the Bat Haus coworking space now.
“These organizations are on the cutting-edge of education technology,” said Charlene Lake, AT&T’s chief sustainability officer. “Their innovations are helping students succeed in the classroom and beyond.”
As a nonprofit, Quill will receive a $50,000 donation from AT&T, plus $25,000 to “cover costs associated with the program.” The for-profit ventures receive the funding as an investment, though it’s unclear if the accelerator program takes equity in the startups.
