You can now A/B test your profile pic

FaceOff takes the guess work out of upping your selfie game.

FaceOff is a free app that allows people to A/B test their profile pictures. How? By allowing the app’s community to vote on two photos face-to-face.
Creator Elan Miller, 28, says the service has found a robust audience in just over a week.
“Basically it’s just a really easy way to choose your profile pictures,” Miller explained. “You put up two photos and the community judges which is better.” Sounds simple.

Pick, please: Elan Miller sent Technical.ly a FaceOff of himself.

For the cost of a Facebook authentication, you can even play on the web.
Miller is the cofounder of Idea Monster, a web development studio based on the Lower East Side. He and most of his studiomates live in Williamsburg.
The app came about as a side project from Idea Monster’s flagship app, Glimpse (which got Miller included on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list for consumer technology). Glimpse is a dating app based off users’ Instagram accounts — a departure from Facebook authentication and a bio.
What the group noticed while making Glimpse was that people change their profile pictures an awful lot.
“We saw it happening and thought it would be fun to build this side project,” he said. “Your profile picture is your first impression online. It’s a little like a book cover in a bookstore. We thought it would be really cool to automate this behavior.”
If it seems that people are more and more interested in automating personal behavior, that might indeed be the case. The Quantified Self movement (think Sleep Cycle, Fitbit, etc.) is increasingly popular. The New York Times had a good piece recently, detailing how and why people are turning to our devices to regulate our behavior.
Miller says FaceOff has done very well in its first week. It was featured in Refinery29 as a featured app of the week and has gotten a lot of attention on Product Hunt.
