Event highlights for the week of August 3 – August 9, 2009

Every Monday morning, Technically Philly will preview the best free tech events in Philadelphia and the surrounding region

What do the Phillies’ farm system, our Brian James Kirk‘s apartment and our events calendar have in common this week?
They’re all nearly empty.
Cliff Lee and new apartments aside, techies apparently are enjoying this little thing we call “summer” as the TP event calendar is as sparse as ever.
But fear not, as Refresh Philly should have enough action to keep you occupied all week when the group meets at the Comcast Center on Monday. Three speakers are scheduled, including former Q&A club member Gwen Shaffer.
The next day, you can kick it with NetSquared at NetTuesday and chat about when to use social media. The group’s new Web site will be used as an example.
All events listed on the event calendar are free to attend. Be sure to check our complete calendar for more information, or follow us past the jump.

Monday, August 3: Refresh Philly returns to its lecturing ways with three speakers. First up is Pamela H. Zimmerman to chat about PARKing day, the event that encourages city residents to turn parking spaces into actual recreational parks. Participants are encouraged to taunt the PPA while doing so. Afterward, Beth Van Why of DesignPhiladelphia will talk about the event that celebrates all things design. And lastly, former PW journo Gwen Shaffer of One Web Day. If it sounds familiar, its because we told you about it last month. 6:30. Center City. RSVP. [view more events]
Tuesday, August 4: Philly Net Squared has a new, spiffy, Drupal-based Web site and darnit if they won’t take advantage. The plan is to meet at Buffalo Billards and use phillynetsquared.org has an example for when and how to use social media on Web pages. Hint: putting a “Share This” button on every godforsaken page doesn’t count. Participants are also encouraged to offer their own sites as examples. We’ll take this opportunity to point out our RSS and Twitter feeds. Just sayin’. 6:00 p.m. Old City. RSVP. [view more events]
If you have an event that you think we should be listing, email us. We promise that no email falls in to the contact form netherworld.
