Three free public computer centers housing 29 computers officially opened Wednesday in North Philadelphia as part of a partnership between Congreso de Latinos Unidos and Philadelphia FIGHT.
The organizations held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2800 N. American Street in Kensington. Speakers included Congreso President and CEO Cynthia Figueroa, Philadelphia FIGHT Digital Inclusion Supervisor Deaglan S.Daugherty, Chief of Staff for the Office of Councilwoman Maria Quiñones Sanchez, and two community residents and lab users, according to a press release.
Congreso de Latinos Unidos is an organization that helps Latinos in the eastern part of North Philadelphia gain access to social services. Philadelphia FIGHT is an AIDS service organization that reaches out to Philadelphians suffering from HIV and populations most at risk.
In an attempt to bridge the digital divide in this underserved section of the city, the new KEYSPOT locations also provide broadband internet access and offer basic computer training programs to local residents, according to a press release.
