Tonight is a big night if you like movies and Kickstarter.
Brooklyn filmmaker and Movies Brand founder Kentucker Audley is hosting a handoff party for his hats that say “movies” on them at Videology, on Bedford Avenue, for people who have bought the hats and other merchandise that says “movies” on it from his Kickstarter and website.

If you haven’t been following the story of the hat that says “movies” on it, it’s weird and very tongue-in-cheek in a sort of meta, ironic type of way. (If you have been following it, I’ll see you at Videology tonight!) Audley thought that the dominance of movies had come into question with the rise of video games and virtual reality (and if you read Technical.ly, you know he might be right).
Audley is a stalwart for movies. “Huge fan,” he told Technical.ly in a September interview. “I watch hundreds of movies every couple months.”
So he decided to start a movies awareness campaign and launched a Kickstarter for people who wanted to buy hats that just said “movies” on them.

The inside-joke-that-everyone’s-in-on received a lot of attention online, with the story being picked up by Yahoo!, Complex and Digg. Yancey Strickler, the founder of Kickstarter, backed the project and ordered a movies hat. Perhaps most interestingly, an Australian movies fan read the story and created a tribute project, a shirt with a picture of the hat that says “movies” on it.
“Hi Tyler,” the Aussie wrote in an email. “I saw your recent story about Kentucker Audley’s Kickstarter campaign for a hat that says movies on it. I was disappointed that I could not buy the hat in Australia. However, that project inspired me and I did the next best thing and made a tribute project which I think you will like.”
So that’s the back story. If it’s your thing, come out tonight and support movies with some like-minded people! They’ll be the ones wearing the hat that just says “movies” on it.
