The Design for Manufacturing Forum has recently profiled two Brooklyn makerspaces: Alpha One Labs and CUNY Fuse Lab. Design For Manufacturing is holding its fifth summit in Dumbo on March 20.

Alpha One Labs

Alpha One Labs is a makerspace in Greenpoint with 3D printers and laser cutters and other items its members might need to invent. Its founder, Sean Auriti, describes his idea for pigeon helmets (which could also be rat helmets), which would provide distributed WiFi access by gently putting helmets on pigeons and rats and guiding them to places where wireless internet would be used.

CUNY Fuse Lab

The CUNY Fuse Lab is an educational fabrication lab in Dumbo. It’s a series of spaces, with laser cutting, 3D printing, 3D scanning, robotics and other forms of rapid manufacturing. The space is all computer labs, no traditional classroom space.

The space is mainly used by the Department of Architectural Technology, but they are also starting training for existing professionals in design and architectural technology. Though it is focused on architecture, it is moving into the area of prototyping for manufacturing.

The Design for Manufacturing Forum is a project of Modified Ventures.
