The Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs program, run by the U.S. Economic Development Administration, was created by the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act to grow globally competitive technology industries outside the handful of metros that already dominate them. In October 2023, the Commerce Department designated 31 Tech Hubs. Each is a regional coalition of universities, companies, governments and nonprofits organized around an emerging technology. Designation never guaranteed money. Hubs have competed for implementation grants in uneven rounds, and the program’s priorities have shifted between presidential administrations.
Technical.ly covers Tech Hubs as part of our reporting on place-based economic development across the country. We follow the regions that won funding and the ones that came up short. And we keep asking the question that outlasts any award announcement: whether these coalitions build something that endures after the federal money ends.
