Wilmington social venture startup WilmInvest got a boost last week when it took the top prize in the 2019 Swim with Sharks pitch competition finals. The annual New Castle County Chamber of Commerce competition awards $10,000 in cash plus about $4,000 in resources to a young local startup that impresses multiple panels of expert judges from the Delaware business community.

WilmInvest’s model involves acquiring vacant properties in Wilmington, renovating them, and managing them as residences for houseless families while offering job and financial planning support. So far, it’s placed three families, with two more expected to be housed by the end of the year, thanks to Sharks.

So, how did the WilmInvest model become a reality? You can get all the details when its cofounders, Bryce Fender and Joel Amin, who are guests at the free Startup Grind Wilmington event at Goldey-Beacom College on Nov. 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It’s hosted by the college’s Entrepreneurship Club and DBA Program.

The event will include a 45-minute fireside chat with the founders, a Q&A session and networking.
