Wikipedia, the go-to info source that seeks to democratize access to knowledge, has long-grappled with inherited biases and inequities. There are even Wikipedia pages dedicated to its gender and racial inequities.

One strategy that has helped bust inequalities within the online platform are themed edit-a-thon sessions, where a diverse group of people spends a few hours adding and expanding pages for underrepresented people, causes or organizations.

This Saturday, the Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon — a free event happening at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. — will look to help people expand representation on Wikipedia for Latina and gender-fluid Latinx artists. The event will be facilitated by Raquel Salas Rivera, the 2018-2019 Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, and Mary Mark Ockerbloom, Wikipedian in residence at the Science History Institute.

Participants are expected to bring their laptop and chargers. The event facilitators will equip aspiring editors with the knowledge to edit and create pages. A shortlist of suggested artists will help guide the creation of new pages and expansions to existing ones.
