Rankings, rankings, rankings. We try not to give them too much clout — especially since lists have been notoriously brutal toward Wilmington in particular (looking at WalletHub’s “25 Worst Places to Raise a Family“).
So process this accordingly, but the American Express-commissioned State of Women-Owned Business report is one for the (mostly) “positive” column.
The report analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners, taking into account relative changes in gross domestic product.
A few factoids:
- Delaware has an estimated 29,833 women-owned businesses, employing 30,277 people.
- Revenue from Delaware women-owned businesses contributes roughly $4,014,626 of the $1,850,114,492 in national sales sales revenue for 2019.
- The number of woman-owned firms in Delaware increased by 11.3% since 2014 (ranked #16).
- Employment at woman-owned firms increased by 7.7% since 2014 (ranked #9).
- Estimated yearly data show a small 1.4 to 2.0% drop in the number of Delaware women-owned businesses and overall revenue between 2018 and 2019 (ranked #8).
- Woman-owned businesses in Delaware in ranked #4 (tied with Virginia) in employment vitality — meaning the contribution of women-owned businesses to job creation grew at a faster rate than most of the nation, behind Maine, Minnesota and Indiana.
