SpotCrime founder Colin Drane has talked about the need for police departments to create more transparency by opening up crime data. At the same time, the Baltimore startup is working to get that data in front of more eyeballs.
The startup already has deals with television station operators like Tegna and Sinclair Broadcast Group. But they’re also looking at where TV is going next through Apple TV.
This week, SpotCrime introduced its Apple TV app that can show crime data in a viewer’s area.
Using the Apple TV remote, viewers can search specific areas and look at specific data about a crime. Like on mobile or desktop, the map can also be dragged to a new location.
Along with Apple TV, the crime data is also available through family network Life360, AT&T-owned wireless home security outfit LifeShield and real estate app Zillow.
The deals are the primary business model for the company, which hasn’t taken outside funding and doesn’t charge government entities for use of the data. The primary mission, Drane says, is opening up the data and making it available.
