The Society for Science & the Public is a nonprofit with a mission to support young scientists in independent research and to evoke public engagement in science.
This is a continued initiative from the Society for Science and the Public, as half of the organizations the nonprofit is awarding previously received financial support from it, so the Society is adding $30, 500. To date, the Society reported that is has awarded $170, 000 to 29 organizations seeking to improve access to STEM education across the U.S.
“These organizations are seeking to lower the barriers to entry in STEM fields, ensuring students from all backgrounds are provided an opportunity to explore STEM fields and have meaningful experiences,” Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of the Society for Science & the Public, said in a statement.
Of the 20 awardees, four hail from the DMV region. They are:
- Black Girls Dive in Owing Mills, Md. – $5,000
- Congressional App Challenge in Washington, D.C. – $2,500
- ProjectCSGIRLS in Potomac Falls, Va. – $2,500
- SAFE Alternative Foundation for Education in Baltimore, Md. – $2,500
This announcement comes a few months after the nonprofit awarded $120,000 in grants to 35 middle and high school science teachers in 23 states across the country to support STEM research activities in their classrooms.
