Designed and built at the Laurel-based center, the probe is set to launch this summer and head for the outermost layer of the Sun’s atmosphere, called the corona. Along with the closest-ever view of our star, scientists are looking to explore the movement of energy, solar wind and what heats the corona.
The probe itself will have to withstand temperatures of 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit so humans will likely want to be there in name only. The chip gives NASA a way to engage the public in science, and keep a safe distance at the same time.
