Sidecar raises $3.1M; Spark Therapeutics raises $72.8M [Startup Roundup]

WHO’S GETTING FUNDED?

Sidecar, the Center City ecommerce marketing company, raised $3.1 million in a round led by Bala Cynwyd-based Osage Venture Partners, CEO Andre Golsorkhi told us. All previous investors participated, including GSI Commerce founder Michael Rubin. Sidecar raised $1 million earlier this year and is growing rapidly. In the winter of 2013, the company aimed to grow from 30 to 50 staffers in 2014. It’s at 35 staffers currently and is still looking to grow to 50, Golsorkhi said. Sidecar is hiring all across the board, including positions like sales, user experience, product management, data scientists. Its newest customer is electronics retailer TigerDirect.

Spark Therapeutics, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia gene therapy spinout, raised $72.8 million in a round led by Silicon Valley-based Sofinnova Ventures, according to a release. CHOP also participated in the round, using $20 million that it previously dedicated to Spark, joining other investors like Brookside Capital, Deerfield Management Company, Rock Springs Capital, funds and accounts managed by T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc., and Wellington Management Company, LLP. Spark is building a a 28,000 square foot office in University City.

Lawrenceville, N.J.-based Edison Ventures led a $15 million round for New York City-based social marketing company Offerpop, according to a release.

A healthcare startup called Curbside Care raised $20,000 and is looking to raise $150,000 total, according to an SEC filing. Wharton MBAs Grant Mitchell and Scott Ames II are listed as the company’s executives.

Instamour, a mobile dating company, raised $50,000 from friends and family, founder Jason Sherman told us. Sherman has, full disclosure, contributed videos and stories to Technical.ly Philly. It will also receive $100,000 from the Syracuse, N.Y.-based StartFast Venture Accelerator, which Instamour will join this summer. Instamour makes an iOS video dating app that you can download here for free. It has users in more than 20 cities, Sherman said.

Developer Dave Walk has left the City of Philadelphia‘s tech team to join DreamIt Health graduate Grand Round Table. You might remember Walk from his crime map, PHL Crime Mapper.

Jon Gosier, cofounder of public safety analytics company D8A, spoke on a panel as part of the “New York Forum” in Libreville, Gabon with, among others, rap star Akon. Read Gosier’s blog post about it and watch the video of the panel below.

Eventuosity, the event planning platform based in University City, announced that the Washington, D.C.-based USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program will use its platform. The organization gives veterans who have been wounded a chance to play hockey.

Monetate, the Conshohocken ecommerce optimization company, said that its European revenue was up 300 percent in Q1 of 2014. The company opened a London office in the summer of 2012.

We noticed a number of recent departures from PeopleLinx, the Center City startup that gamifies social media for corporations. Spokesman Michael Idinopulos told us it’s just the natural ebb and flow of tech. Curalate, the Center City visual analytics startup, has poached two PeopleLinxers: Kristen Levenick, PeopleLinx’s client success manager, and Katelyn Ares, PeopleLinx’s director of business development. Inside sales manager Steve Graham left for Radnor-based mobile startup Relay, and VP of Client Engagement Liz Coleman also left in May, though no word about where she’s headed to next.
