Submissions are open for the preliminary round of the University of Delaware’s annual startup-funding competition, Hen Hatch. While you need to be affiliated with UD to qualify, some entrepreneurs don’t realize that alumni from any year and any major qualify — and that the startup needs only one UD affiliate to apply. Current UD students, as well as faculty and staff (including retired) may also apply.
In the preliminary round, entrepreneurs are required to write a 3-to-5-page business concept. If you don’t know where to start, there will be a “How to Apply” workshop for students, alumni, faculty and staff Jan. 8. The deadline for getting applications in is Jan. 22.

The finals in April will feature six startups (three student, three alumni/faculty/staff) giving their final presentations (presentations must be given by the company’s UD affiliate(s), fyi). Past Hen Hatch finalists include Carvertise (back when it was called PenguinAds), GoShare, LendEdu (when it was ShopTutors), TheraV (when it was Vibrating Therapeutic Apparel) and Geoswap.
