Power Moves: Andrew Hoagland is nextmv’s new head of revenue

Shortly after closing down Vetd, the B2B startup Andrew Hoagland cofounded with Zach Shapiro in 2017, Hoagland is joining real-time decision automation platform nextmv as its head of revenue.

Nextmv gives developers the ability to make and test algorithms quickly, with a focus on businesses with a logistics and/or supply chain component. Hoagland told Technical.ly the nextmv team and product made his decision a “no-brainer.”

“The founders [CEO Carolyn Mooney and CTO Ryan O’Neil] scaled consumer delivery 50 times at Zoomer and Grubhub before starting nextmv,” he said. “The product gives developers the optimization and simulation tools they need to rapidly impact a company’s bottom line, all without hiring a data science team.”

Hoagland said the startup recently completed Y Combinator’s W20 batch, closed a seed round, and will be hiring across multiple roles and departments soon.

Villanova University introduced the new dean of its College of Engineering last week: Dr. Michele Marcolongo will take over as head starting July 31, the university said.

Marcolongo has more than three decades of experience as a researcher, inventor and entrepreneur. She has been a faculty member at Drexel’s College of Engineering for more than 20 years and currently serves as the department head and professor of its materials science and engineering.

“The Villanova College of Engineering is outstanding in its education of world-class engineers who are technically strong and who have a broad liberal arts background to contextualize real-world solutions for the needs of society,” Marcolongo said in a statement. “This approach, along with the creative research and scholarship, is what drew me to Villanova.”

Marcolongo’s research, which focuses on biomaterials and biomedical solutions to treat disease, has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense, per a press release. In addition to her work as a researcher and professor, Marcolongo has cofounded three biomedical startups and holds 15 patents and patent applications.

Web developer, community organizer and public health enthusiast Briana Morgan will be joining the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Innovation and Technology as a content designer.

“I’ve been a fan of the digital transformation work at the city for years,” Morgan said. “I’m thrilled about joining such a stellar team, and I’m excited to keep using technology to increase access to information for Philadelphians.”

Morgan was previously a web coordinator for the Office of HIV Planning. She recently stepped down from the Philadelphia Area New Media Association board after five years of service and is still a member BarCamp Philly’s leadership team.

Aside from that, Morgan said she’s currently dreaming up her next Django project and waiting for the library branches to reopen.
