Check out Whitebox’s massive new Baltimore HQ and fulfillment hub

The former Under Armour distribution hub is nine times the size of the ecommerce tech company's last space. It comes as the team is looking to keep growing in 2020.

Amid growth in revenue and hiring, Whitebox has a new Baltimore headquarters for the second time in about 16 months.

The ecommerce tech company opened a 365,000-square-foot space at 1010 Swan Creek Drive in Curtis Bay on Wednesday. Located in a former Under Armour distribution center, the new space is nine times the size of Whitebox’s last headquarters off Holabird Avenue. The location is also strategic: With Whitebox close to I-95 and BWI, the company said it can offer offer two-day shipping to about 70% of the country, and next day shipping on the East Coast.

The headquarters will serve as a base for the company’s corporate functions, with teams like operations, marketplace strategy and sales and marketing. It will also serve as the East Coast fulfillment center for the company, where it applies its platform that automates key ecommerce functions involved in both selling and moving products for brands like McCormick, Super Coffee and Ricola.

The new space comes as Whitebox has grown quickly in the last year and a half, since bringing on former Media exec Marcus Startzel as CEO and hiring a team of executives with experience at Amazon and in Baltimore’s adtech community. Ecommerce had already been growing in recent years, and Whitebox saw a 141% increase in revenue from 2018 to 2019, while earning’s Growth Company of the Year award in 2019.

Ecommerce has become an especially key service in the COVID-19 pandemic, and Whitebox saw quarter-over-quarter revenue growth of 40% and 78% in the first two quarters of this year as it hired quickly, per the company. It now has 75 employees working out of the Baltimore HQ, and plans to hire 30 more in the coming year.

“Our focus on uniting supply and demand in one data-driven system makes all the difference for our clients, especially in the wake of an accelerated digital transformation,” said Startzel. “Clients across the board are asking for more data, more insights to understand the changing consumer and optimize every opportunity in the value chain. Whitebox’s technology was built to meet this moment and gives our clients the intelligence, nimbleness and speed they need to meet explosive consumer demand while reducing costs.”

With the new HQ, the company also plans to offer free event space for tech companies and nonprofits to host events like hackathons, education and job readiness programs.
