Peach Labs picked up 15,000 customers for its recently-released DropBot in one swoop.
The Baltimore-based startup that looks to make insurance for smartphones and other devices cheaper and easier is taking on customers from Bawte, a Des Moines, Iowa-based startup that recently shut down.
The deal has a Techstars connection, as Peach CEO Luke Cooper and Bawte founder John Jackovin became friends at the Boulder, Colo.-based accelerator and both launched their companies in the tech-friendly mountain town.
Bawte sought to make owners’ manuals, warranties and other info about products available to consumers without the need for paper guides. According to the Des Moines Register, the company announced in March that it would wind down operations after businesses were slow to adopt the technology.
As a result of the deal, Peach Labs will be able to offer service agreements to Bawte customers on the new Peach app, DropBot. The app can detect damage to a cellphone, and automatically gets users started on the claims process after the drop.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
