Nanci Hersh to give Artist Talk at The Mill

If you work at or visit The Mill coworking space in downtown Wilmington, you’ve probably noticed the dynamic artwork currently on display. If not, you’ll have the opportunity to check it out Sept. 7, along with a talk by the artist, Nanci Hersh.

Hersh is a working artist, teacher and the executive director of the Delaware Institute for the Arts in Education. Her exhibition at The Mill includes paintings from two series, one inspired by her backyard koi pond and the other inspired by walks with the family dog by White Clay Creek. Often, she uses spray paint and nets to create distinctive water-like patterns.

“The Koi Pond Series grew out of an intention to feel centered or grounded in a time of transition,” said Hersh. “These paintings are about finding the grace and beauty in the ebbs and flow of life. In my newest works, our beloved black lab mix and Jack Russell terrier are found moving — or standing — in a layered and entangled body of water as I explore how to navigate issues around aging and passing of parents, pets and children going off to college.”

Hersh’s work has been exhibited all over the world, including Japan, Australia and Estonia, as well the U.S. She has also illustrated a children’s book based on her personal story, Butterfly Kisses and Wishes on Wings: When someone you love has cancer, in partnership with her cousin, author Ellen McVicker.

“We’re so happy to have Nanci’s work here,” said Rebecca Parsons, director of operations at The Mill. “She’s so sweet. We can’t wait to experience her artist talk and show her around The Mill.”

The Artist Talk will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by a reception from 6–8:30 p.m. Both are free and open to the public. Hersh’s art will be on display through Sept. 28, 2018.
