This startup wants to be 911 for your pets

Regular ambulances don't offer transportation services for pets in need; this startup does. Meet K911.

Think you can just call 911 to transport your pets to the emergency room? Well, think again. The average ambulance isn’t particularly equipped to handle veterinary emergencies.

But now there’s a Claymont startup looking to fix that. K911 is the creation of Ryan Locke and Troy Warner. The business is currently based out of Locke’s home. Warner is an emergency services dispatcher (for humans).
“He’s gotten enough calls over the years from people about their animals,” Locke told Technical.ly. “We realized it wouldn’t be something difficult to do. We’re both extreme animal lovers, we realized there was a need. We want to get people and their animals to where they need to go and hopefully be successful at it.”

K911’s services fall within two categories: emergency transport and pre-scheduled transport. The latter is reserved for vet appointments, especially for owners who might not have access to a vehicle or are unable to physically carry their pets.
The service isn’t limited to dogs and cats. Locke himself owns a lizard and a gecko. Animals that would be described as “exotics” can also be transported.
“We can transport exotics but our insurance requires that they are caged,” Locke said. “We also have buckets of aerators to be able to take a fish to the vet if need be.”
The duo was recently profiled in a News Journal video, which you can watch here.
