Georgetown Law is launching two graduate programs focused on tech policy this fall

Beginning this fall, the Georgetown University Law Center will start offering two new graduate degree programs focused on technology law and policy.

The programs are designed for lawyers, technologists, Capitol Hill staff members, tech advocates and other professionals. Both programs span a full year when taken full-time, but students can study part-time and finish in two to three years.

The Master of Law and Technology degree will be offered to non-lawyers and and educate students in technology law and tech-related policy issues. The Master of Laws in Technology Law & Policy degree program will be offered to law school graduates interested in becoming experts in tech policy.

“Rapid advances in technology are continually raising new ethical, social and legal challenges, and our society faces a critical need for experts across fields who are prepared to address these issues,” said William M. Treanor, dean and executive VP at Georgetown Law, in a statement. “Georgetown Law’s unmatched tech law and policy resources together with our location in the heart of the nation’s capital make this the perfect place to launch these new programs.”

The university currently has 19 full-time faculty members with more than a dozen adjunct professors who teach more than 70 courses. Paul Ohm, professor of law and Georgetown Law’s associate dean for academic affairs, said in a press release that there’s a demand and need for law and policy expertise.

“Our mission is to train and enlighten lawyers and non-lawyers alike to be prepared to help law firms, businesses, government agencies, elected officials, and public interest organizations face the complex technological challenges of the modern world,” Ohm said.

The Master of Laws in Technology Law & Policy includes courses focused on the laws of cryptocurrencies, autonomous vehicles, election integrity and more. Students accepted into the Master of Law and Technology degree program can expect to take courses focused on the foundation of American law, digital law, governing emerging technologies and more.

Classes will begin in late August, and Georgetown Law is accepting applications now.
