Falls Church, Va.-based General Dynamics Information Technology, an IT unit of the large defense contractor, announced that it has secured funding to provide AI tech to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The funding contract is estimated at $49 million that will be dispersed over a five-year period to multiple companies.

The contract comes from the agency’s Program Support Center, where GDIT has earned a spot to compete to help HHS better use advanced tech, like AI, to modernize their efforts. GDIT’s specific funding amount was not disclosed but Nextgov reported that funding amounts could range from $300,000 to $8 million each.
“We are excited to join HHS in their journey to a more efficient future,” Kamal Narang, head of GDIT’s health sector, said in a statement. “GDIT will utilize our expertise in AI, blockchain and other next-generation technologies to help transform HHS’ business processes and enhance their mission delivery.”
HHS created the Program Support Center contract earlier this year to look for companies to help it implement advanced tech into its every day workflows. The agency began accepting proposals in January and in order to earn a spot on the contract, companies had to show success working on government projects in three of these four areas, according to Nextgov:
- Applied ideation and design support.
- Engineering and process engineering support.
- Systems design.
- Engineering, prototyping and model making support.
During this testing period, GDIT will use the funding to pilot, test and implement new tech into HHS’s processes, including the use of AI, machine learning, robotic process automation and more.
