Emerging Technology Center in Canton faces uncertain future with lease set to expire in a year

The lease for the Emerging Technology Center in Canton, which rents 50,000 square feet of space in the Can Company on the 2400 block of Boston Street, expires in September 2013, and there’s no word yet whether that lease will be renewed, reports the Baltimore Business Journal.

When asked about ETC’s future plans, director Deborah Tillett said the organization has “got a lot of stuff we’re thinking through so as an organization we can continue to be relevant and viable.” [more]

A part of the Baltimore Development Corporation, the ETC serves as a nonprofit business incubator for early-stage technology companies in the city, providing those companies with office space, management consulting and networking contacts. The ETC also maintains a location at Johns Hopkins University Eastern, formerly the site of Eastern High School. Can Company property manager C. William “Bill” Struever said to the Baltimore Business Journal, “We’re going to continue to talk to ETC and are very much hopeful they will remain a presence, maybe in a different form.”
Among the companies housed in the ETC is Beehive Baltimore, a coworking space co-founded by 410 Labs’ Dave Troy, which became an official part of the ETC in April. The Beehive recently hosted AccelerateBaltimore‘s first Demo Day.
