A Columbia-based dev firm is looking to bring compliance software to the farm.
NextLOGiK has a new platform called COMPwalk.farm to help farmers stay compliant with food safety regulations through the federal government.
One regulation is the Food Safety Modernization Act, which was passed in 2015. Designed to protect against foodborne illnesses, that set out safety requirements for farms producing fruits and vegetables. Others include the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Good Agricultural Practices, which are often required by packagers and retailers. The process of compliance involves inspections, as well as lots paperwork.
According to NEXTLOGiK Director of Marketing and Operations Helen Little, the firm was initially offering its COMPwalk platform for healthcare compliance. It developed the offerings for agriculture after hearing from farmers about the need to streamline the process. This came about after NEXTLOGiK got involved in the Howard County Agriculture Department’s Ag Tech Center. Talking to farmers also helped the firm get input as they developed the platform.
The platform is designed to provide food safety mock inspections, track corrective actions and also provides a way to download templates and store documents in a single location. The platform is offered for $399 a year, which Little said is cheaper than other offerings and is designed to make it accessible for smaller, family farms.
Currently, it’s available in a web app. A mobile app is also in the works.
