A Constellation company that provides HVAC and plumbing services is piloting hybrid technology in its service vans.
Baltimore-based BGE HOME (which is different from power company BGE) outfitted 10 service vans with the hybrid electric drive technology initially, and is now ordering 20 more for next year. The company said it would evaluate the vehicles over the next several months. The switch could lead to up to a 20% reduction in carbon emissions, and savings of up to 25% jump in miles per gallon.
“With transportation accounting for around 30% of greenhouse gas emissions nationwide, it’s crucial that we explore ways to make our operations more efficient,” said Tamla Olivier, president and CEO of BGE HOME, in a statement. “This practical, innovative solution both benefits our bottom line and creates a positive environmental impact for the customers and communities we serve.”
The hybrid systems are made by XL. Vehicles with the system rely on both XL’s technology and a gas-powered motor.
XL received investment in 2017 from Constellation Technology Ventures, which is the venture arm of Constellation. Now one of the company’s subsidiaries is using its product.
