Ampslam, a free music-sharing website based out of the Emerging Technology Center, made its public launch last week.
The bootstrapped website is the product of attorney Thomas Giannini, and, according to a press release, he claims Ampslam is the “first hosting platform for independent music to integrate music and video digital distribution and web promotion with a social media networking technology.”
The one salient difference: a site like SoundCloud will charge musicians for upgraded plans to share music, while Giannini said via e-mail that Ampslam is a free service.
Helping to promote Ampslam’s public launch is Charles Village startup Wham City Lights, which is producing a customized mobile light show at no charge for the musician who wins Ampslam’s January song contest.
Since Ampslam’s beta launch in 2013, the site has given out more than $2,000 in its song contests, Giannini said.
