In the near future, a kayak ordered on Amazon is likely to come from Maryland.
Amazon announced it is set to open a new “fulfillment,” or distribution, center in the Cecil County town of North East, expanding on its already-existing Baltimore operation.
The 1.2 million square foot center will handle picking, packing and shipping on large items such as big-screen televisions, kayaks and patio furniture, the company’s announcement states. Amazon is expecting to employ 700 people at the new spot. Amazon also has robots to do a lot of work.
The Cecil Whig reports the ecommerce giant plans to invest $90 million into the center. The Maryland Economic Development Assistance and Authority Fund (MEDAAF) is providing a $1.2 million conditional loan for the project.
The ecommerce giant opened a sorting and fulfillment operation on Broening Highway in Baltimore in 2015, where it employs 3,000 people.
With the large operation, Baltimore was an early market for one-hour delivery and restaurant delivery.
