A 3D printing and prototyping lab will soon open at the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship (MCE) in Howard County.
The lab is the central piece of a new county initiative called 3D Maryland, “designed to increased awareness of 3D printing and digital manufacturing,” according to a press release.
“It’s a Howard County initiative that we envision as something that has the potential to be a statewide project,” said Terry Owens, director of communications at the Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA).
“We plan to work with our partners in the manufacturing sector, groups like the Regional Marketing Institute, to get the word out, and provide incubation and assistance to new and existing manufacturers,” said Lawrence F. Twele, CEO of the HCEDA, in the release.
Equipped with three 3D printers, the lab will give “entrepreneurs and existing businesses opportunity to come in and see how tech works,” Owens said.
Heading up the new lab at the MCE will be Jan Baum, director of the Object Lab at Towson University. Owens said Baum will take a leave of absence from Towson to work full-time as director of 3D Maryland.
