This Week in Jobs: Remote Controls

Very Casual Fridays.

Hi! You’re receiving the Pittsburgh edition of This Week in Jobs (TWIJ), a weekly newsletter written by our team at Technical.ly in partnership with InnovatePGH and the Pittsburgh Innovation District. Each week we put together for you a slate of news and fresh job opportunities in the ‘burgh.

We try to keep it light here at TWIJ, but there’s simply not much of daily life in Pittsburgh that’s not been touched by concerns over the coronavirus. We hope you and your family are managing OK as there are more disruptions in basic routines like going to school and work.

More of you are no doubt reading this at home, doing loads of laundry or dishes in between punching out Slack conversations and internal emails. With the number of school closures increasing, more of you certainly have had youngsters occupying some of your Wi-Fi bandwidth while trying to keep business going along.

One thing’s for sure: You can take the word “guilty” out of guilty-pleasure TV streaming for a little while. Social hermits, this is your moment — you are now upstanding examples of sound public health strategy. Your country thanks you, introverts.

The News

There have been early signs of business disruption for startups, including supply chain issues and factory slowdowns in China that have affected local companies, including VIT Initiative. The cancellation of SXSW is just one signal that getting in front of investors will probably be tough for a while.

Pittsburgh’s biotech field is rising to the challenge of COVID-19. UPMC announced it has developed its own test for the virus, and The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Research is leading research locally on a vaccine.

Want a pocket-sized Wall-E by your side at home? North Side-based Digital Dream Labs hopes to have two tiny robots ready for the consumer market for the holiday season. The robots, Vector and Cozmo, are heavy on personality and designed to be personal sidekicks, performing functions similar to Siri or Alexa.

It’s not just TWIJ that’s newly arrived in Pittsburgh. Technical.ly is also rolling out a reporting series in partnership with the Pittsburgh Innovation District, to chronicle the economic change taking place in Pittsburgh. Each month, Technical.ly will feature a deep dive on the local tech scene.

Technical.ly also announced last week that its membership program will no longer be a paid service. Instead, you can enjoy the benefits of Technical.ly membership — stuff like early access to events, discounts and a monthly newsletter with insights and perks — for free. All you have to do is  take a survey that asks if/how Technical.ly has helped you in finding jobs. Our goal is to help you navigate your career, so we want to hear from you.

The Jobs

Your dog’s separation anxiety got you down? These jobs are remote:

The End

That’s it for this week.

Hopefully the coming week will be full of silver linings — binge-watch ‘til you drop, maybe even read that book that’s been acting as a coaster for several weeks? You might even use that extra unstructured time to apply to that job you’d had your eye on.

In the meantime, you can always check out openings from across the mid-Atlantic on Technical.ly’s jobs board any time.
