This Week in Jobs: Mint Pringles Edition

Last-ditch foods, hiring news and more.

Editor’s note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ — “twidge.”). Below is this week’s edition. Here’s the last one we published; it’s meant to live in your inbox. Sign up for the newsletter here.

Bed, Bath, Beyond

If mint Pringles, Ukrainian yogurt and wine from Missouri sound good to you, Bartenson’s would like you to know they’ve still got plenty in stock.

American shoppers may be emptying store shelves of staples like eggs, milk and flour, but more unconventional foods, like Beyond’s vegan “meats,” Banza’s chickpea pastas, and chocolate hummus (just … why?) are getting left behind on store shelves. No surprise in the science behind these decisions — shoppers are seeking the comfort of the familiar. What’s still unclear, however, is why Dasani water can’t catch a break.

The News

For you company leaders out there, we know it can be lonely at the top. That’s one reason Technical.ly is sharing the email that Technically Media CEO Christopher Wink recently sent to staff as the COVID-19 crisis continues to unfold. We’d also love to know how you’re communicating with your teams during the pandemic. And, as always, we hope our ongoing coverage can be a resource as we navigate the impacts of the novel coronavirus.

That surprise investor. The sudden shift in market demand. The a-ha moment. Stories of successful startups are replete with changes in fortune, often just when the business outlook was at its darkest. But how do you know when to stick it out and when it’s time to throw in the towel? Repeat entrepreneur McKeever Conwell, portfolio manager at TEDCO, joined the recently launched TWIJ Show to talk about how to navigate this deeply personal — and intensely difficult — decision, and how to emerge stronger no matter what you choose.

As newsrooms large and small are buckling under the financial impacts of COVID-19, Technical.ly is doing the opposite, expanding its reporting ranks in Baltimore as it strives to cover wealth and poverty amid Baltimore’s ongoing economic transformation. It’s getting help from Report for America and the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, but needs your help, too. It’s launched the Technical.ly Journalism Fund to fuel these reporting efforts, and would love your support as it continues to cover you and your communities.

It’s been five years since the funeral for Freddie Gray. Five years since National Guard troops lined the Inner Harbor and protesters clashed with law enforcement in an outcry over police violence — what would become known as the Baltimore Uprising. Now, the city finds itself in the midst of another crisis claiming the lives and businesses of its residents. Reporter Stephen Babcock shares his reflections.

The rise of cell phones has long bedeviled 911 dispatchers, who once relied on landlines to accurately pinpoint callers’ locations and send help wherever needed. Now, RapidDeploy is working with Baltimore to implement RadiusPlus, a map that integrates with 911 systems. Uber and Lyft have no problem finding where you are — and now ambulances can, too.
