DevOpsDays Baltimore puts the community on the agenda

At the first Baltimore edition of #DevOpsDays, Kevin Chung was energized by the conversations he had, and the chance to meet others working at the nexus of software development and operations.
Coming off of the event in March 2017, Chung wanted to keep the momentum going.
At DevOpsDays, Chung was struck at how folks from organizations of all sizes came together to share information.
“There’s a really rich community here but it took a spark to get that started and bring it to the forefront,” he said.
By May, he organized the first Baltimore DevOps Meetup. The gatherings have been held monthly ever since at Under Armour, where Chung leads an engineering group in ecommerce. It now has nearly 400 members.
So when DevOpsDays Baltimore 2018 is held March 21–22 at Inner Harbor’s Columbus Center, it will be something of an anniversary for the group. Chung is now on the organizing team of DevOps Days, as well.

DevOpsDays is part of a worldwide series that’s organized by local communities. Delali Dzirasa, the president of Baltimore dev agency Fearless and the chair of the event, seconded the opportunity to bring people from government and private companies of a variety of sizes together “outside of their normal spaces get together and connect as a community.”
This year’s event will feature a mix of talks about culture as well as code. Keeping things creative, the agenda includes references to Black Mirror, potato farming and Waffle House.
For both Dzirasa and Chung, one of the highlights of the conference comes later in the afternoon of each day. That’s when the “Open Spaces” sessions allow the attendees to set the agenda and propose the talks on the spot.
It’s during those sessions, Chung said, “where the community drives what the agenda is going to be.”
