Hi! You’re reading the Pittsburgh edition of This Week in Jobs (TWIJ), a weekly newsletter written by our team at Technical.ly in partnership with InnovatePGH and the Pittsburgh Innovation District. Each week we put together for you a slate of news and fresh job opportunities in the ‘burgh. If you’re not already subscribed, you can do so here.

In a week where everything else is demanding our attention, we don’t blame you for looking for a small distraction. In fact, some folks have made a career out of being able to seamlessly shift a viewer’s focus without them noticing.

The term “sleight of hand,” comes from Old Norse and was used as early as 1593 to mean deception through swift manual dexterity. The idea of pointing something out to distract from something else is old hat, but science has only recently confirmed that, neurologically, when we focus specifically on something, we can successfully filter out the rest of what’s around us.

So, whether that’s keeping your mind off the news with a job search, or honing in on your close-up magic skills to impress a hiring manager over Zoom (and distract them from looking at your messy home office), take some time for a little misdirection today.
